Engineering Tower Cranes for Extreme Hurricane Conditions
For a major project in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, Mighty Cranes supplied and erected two Comansa tower cranes, a 10LC 140 and a 21LC 210.
Located in one of the Caribbean's most hurricane-exposed regions, the project presented a significant engineering challenge: how to protect two fully erected tower cranes against extreme hurricane-force winds without compromising their normal operation or performance.
Mighty Cranes developed a bespoke hurricane restraint solution, configuring the cranes to D50 wind-loading requirements and engineering a specialised hurricane tie system.
The system incorporated the standard tower tie collar frame, reinforced with additional central ballast and four 20-tonne concrete blocks, secured to the tie collar using high-strength cables. The arrangement provided additional resistance against lateral movement, rocking and overturning under extreme wind conditions.
The engineering was put to the ultimate test when Hurricane Matthew made a direct impact on site in 2016. The hurricane produced exceptionally severe conditions, with trees in the immediate vicinity of the cranes being flattened by the extreme winds.
Both tower cranes survived the direct impact with only minimal damage, demonstrating the effectiveness of the engineered restraint system and the importance of designing crane installations specifically for the environmental conditions they may encounter.
